Crain Communications is a long-standing, prestigious, American publishing conglomerate, world renowned for its various domain-specific publications, e.g. AdvertisingAge (AdAge), Autoweek, Plastic News, Creativity, etc.

Crain also runs and maintains various responsive (mobile and tablet friendly) websites to accompany their printed publications.

What They Needed

Agile/Scrum Team Bandwidth Support:

Crain’s Agile/Scrum development teams–working to keep Crain’s various websites up and running, free of bugs, as well as frequently enhanced–approached PRDXN for resource bandwidth (aka team augmentation) support. Their request was as follows:

  • 4-5 resources (PHP/Drupal Developers & Manual Testers) in Mumbai to complement their existing on-site (and remote) Agile/Scrum teams working on product enhancements and issues in relation to Crain’s various digital publications and websites
  • Hours-overlap (between the team members in Mumbai and NYC) to attend the daily Scrum stand-ups, a weekly pointing meeting, bi-weekly planning meetings, bi-weekly retrospective meetings and bi-weekly code workshops
  • Resources with PHP/Object-oriented programming (OOP) experience
  • Resources with an acceptable level of English communication skills in order to be value-adding participants in the various Scrum meetings

Drupal “Event” Site/Platform for Easy Replication:

In addition to supporting their Agile/Scrum development team with additional resources to “get more done”, PRDXN was approached to help the team build out a Drupal “Event” site for easy replication for their numerous yearly events (e.g. AdAge Brand Summit, AdAge Women to Watch, etc.).

Agile/Scrum Team Bandwidth Support:

To meet the needs of each Scrum master’s requirements, we went through an internal interview and selection process that focused on technical skill sets, experience, and communication skills. This helped us select the most appropriate PRDXN resources for the engagement.

Afterwards, we introduced the East Coast-based and Mumbai teams and moved into the setup and ramp-up phase, which involved setting up locally (via Vagrant) to start working on Atlassian Jira tickets assigned to us during the Scrum planning meetings.

Throughout our engagement, communication and organization of work, we have been greatly facilitated by these cloud-based tools and technologies:

The PRDXN team laid out the development plan/architecture for the team to comment on, before proceeding with executing the various development and testing activities involved.

The Results

We helped the Agile/Scrum development team execute more with less. We assisted the NYC team by working on tasks that their NYC-based resources were ready to move on from. We played the role of quality assurance/auditor on tickets where confirmation of the acceptance criteria and the definition of “done” were needed.

All in all, we’ve been an additional set of brains and hands to help push Crain’s various web entities in the right direction.

Finally, in the case of the Drupal “Event” site/platform, we helped close out an additional project that their NYC-based resources didn’t have the bandwidth to work on.
